Happy Friday FS friends

Back to normal. Yesterday, ate within budget, got that thing done and sent off to the lawyer. Heading outside to work in the yard. I must say that Fall and Spring are my favourite times of year. A little cooler, good for working and both are beginnings in their own ways. Splitting plants and finding them new locations now is a start to next years garden.

Looking forward to the weekend. Will likely go over caloric budget as I'm going to spend a couple of days with my roommate from my stay in hospital in 2017. Lovely Irish lady who lives on a farm near Georgian Bay. When I met her, she was in rather a bad way. One of their Wagyu cows had decided to ram her in the stall breaking all of her ribs. She is lucky to be alive and our time post op together cemented a friendship that has lasted. I have no intention of declining any meal she has to offer despite there likely being things that are not currently in my plan. I will need to learn to adjust intake for such occassions in future.

On my way back home I'll be popping in to take the woman who literally saved my life back in 2017 to lunch. The Niagara Region healthcare system failed miserably. I am eternally grateful to her, as I had been stuck in a local hospital with a fractured acetabulum that they did not have the skills to repair due to the type of traumatic injury. The regional trauma centre was unable to take me in for a lack of space. For nine days I lay there having to lift my leg with a dog leash, on morphine, filthy dirty, with a catheter in and a UTI that was not being attended to. I think it was the one and only time in my life that I lost all hope and wished I were dead. This lady was my advocate and got me the hell out of the region and into trauma surgery in another catchement area in the province. Universal healthcare is all fine and dandy for the most part, but many of us fall between the cracks. I was one of them.

Happy that all worked out in the end

Over and out

ANNI are you Canadian? We down here always talk about universal health care being such a gift. That’s a horrifying story. So glad you recovered!

Oh my heavens.

Hey YOH. Yes. In Canada. For the most part it works quite well. I just happen to live in a region that is way underserved. Part of the problem is me. The surgeon when I still lived in Toronto, who removed my ruptured appendix (ruptured while waiting to be seen after 12hrs in ER triaged into the lowest level stomach flu and eczema group), and who a few years later removed my severely inflamed gallbladder (the hospital had sent me home to come back for imaging the next day) told me that I was far too stoic and needed to complain more. Trouble is when I was stuck in the hospital with the pelvic trauma I had no family to advocate for me, and couldn't squawk too loudly because the quality of care was already horrible and I was quite afraid of how much worse it might get. Granted, that particular hospital has a bad reputation locally - aging building and staff that doesn't really give a flying F.

What happens if there is another trauma in your family? Stuck with same hospital?

My family is only me. No other ones left. Keeping my fingers crossed that there is no other trauma in the next few years (or ever). They are building a new hospital near me that should be ready by the fall of 2028. Granted I don't think they will have a trauma centre. The closest one is in Hamilton an hour away (which is where I was supposed to be sent for surgery but there was no splce) There was a time where my type of case would have been shipped to Buffalo as they are 20 minutes away, but that affiliation was lost years ago, I suppose when US costs became unreasonably high.

O ANNI. Im so sorry there is no family left. You dont sound old enough to have lost all your family. My heart goes out to you. I hope you have friends that are as close as family so you have an advocate if, heaven forbid, that need ever arose. Here is to sending you warm wishes for health and well being and happiness.
