Totally agree. "Be yourself - everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde. I follow that practice.

I wish young people would learn this earlier in their life. I believe these things come organically with the wisdom of age.

I wish this was taught in school, that is how important it is. In health class.

Not only school, but “church” (maybe not) — parents #1, but since that is so lacking in many families we need to do it for each other. When we talk to others, ask favors from others, have expectations of what others should be doing for us, we need to think about what we are asking and how it might be compromising the time, energy and resources of that person. My brother’s grandson attends a school where they actually teach this type of thing and and cover these issues. Pretty much blows me away to see hoe they do it. — teaching self respect, kindness, self reliance, compromise and how to say NO. WHO KNEW

HGB— kids don’t learn this in younger life because the role models for this are just not there.

Kenna, I love this! Taking a screenshot to save. I was just telling my husband last night, that not until now, that we are living away from the city and lead a quiet rural life, do I realize how busy I was doing things for everyone else. Of course some of the activity was a given, especially when the kids were growing up, but looking back, I did way to much. So happy to be resting now and making choices that fit my way of living now. Thank you for posting this. ❤️

D-not-Cupcake, -bec-ca—— good for you both. It’s hard to do sometimes. I once had a friend who would never commit to doing ANYTHING, a party, a movie whatever at the time you invited her. She would always answer tha she would check her calendar and get back with you. And, she did, very promptly. When she replied in the negative she NEVER gave an excuse or a reason ever. She simply said she was sorry she wouldn’t be able to go or help, whatever. If someone pressed her for a WHY, she would simply reply that it would not work out for her. I always really admired that she put herself and her and her family is needs first and was unapologetic about refusing.

I’m constantly engaged in jobs that are listed as “not mine.” But what if that’s authentically me? Oh, the dilemma…

Kenna, I love this and the story of your friend. I've learned how to do this as well, but it's HARD to not give an excuse! My mother was the worst at it, & I didn't want to be overcommitted like she was. Never explain! Your friends don't need it & your enemies won't believe you anyway. ~Elbert Hubbard 😁
