Eh I grew up drinking only soda by that I mean I never touched water it made me sick. Drank it all the way til I graduated highschool I never had any of those. And was healthy. But I was active. Now is it because of the sugar or inactivity?

We couldn't afford much soda, superman, but I grew up drinking sweet tea and other high sugar drinks. These results are more of a population level trend and aren't going to apply to all individuals. It raises risk rather than being a direct cause and effect. I'm sure your activity helped, but more people than not risk bad health outcomes from too much of the stuff. My grandfather was an alcoholic, chewed tobacco all his life and died at 90. Doesn't make alcoholism or tobacco benign

My ex-husband thought he had arthritis at 30 but it turned out he was just drinking too much diet soda. He tried to quit cold turkey but couldn’t go to the bathroom. Then he slowly switched to water and all his pain went away. We were not expecting that but it was a nice surprise!

Superman6283– the soda issue is actually very involved but the biggest problem is the AMOUNT we drink. Like so many other things we completely abuse it. I drink an 8oz. mini can once in a while because I like it with a taco or pizza but people suck it up and use it to replace water. So it’s the excess coupled with many American’s aversion to physical activity, sedentary jobs, long commutes for work. Diet soda is absolutely no better than regular soda. Lots of articles to be found on this subject out there.

Diet is way better since it erases the reason regular soda is bad. The easily consumed calories...

Kenna I agree with you there. I was eating fast foods and drinking strictly coke, Pepsi if I can’t find coke lol but I was completely healthy until my late 20s when I started having a full time job and became much more sedentary, I started seeing my weight go up and wasn’t feeling good. Writing no it can’t be compared to tobacco. Cuz even if you moderate smoking theres still chances of cancer whereas I never known anyone that eats sugar in a deficit or maintenance get obese. Also agree with Shea diet soda tastes so nasty I get eye bleeds just from the taste alone and in of itself 🤢🤮

On that note let’s be honest. Full time jobs forces people to tire out and be more sedentary. Soooo full time jobs should be the one to blame for causing all those 😏

Also writing, back in the days a 2 liter of soda was .50 and .25 for a gallon of water.... this was way back tho, we’re talking in the 90s!!

superman -- good point on tobacco. I stand corrected. However, given the amount of sugar in a single soda,, I don't consider the amounts most people drink to be a moderate amount of sugar.. As for costs -- I go farther back than you do before the era of super cheap HFCS. In the 70s, it was relatively more expensive. When whatever convenience store it was came out with the 32 oz Big Gulp, we laughed at how ridiculously big it was. Now at a lot of places, that's one of the smaller cups. Is a reasonable size soda here or there gonna kill ya? Nope. But we're living in a world where it's out of control

I never was big on soda like many people. My parents never were. My first MIL was addicted to Pepsi.

Aside from the calorie and weight gain issue, people ignore the damage that large constant spikes in blood sugar do to your body over time.

It’s not full time jobs, people have worked hard all through history— from sun up to sun down and have survived and thrived. Part of it is the stress and chaos that we have brought into our lives in the way of technology and social media— the constant elevation of those stress hormones that many people don’t consider

Kenna I saw those YouTube vids too. How the spike in glucose abs insulin could damage your arterial walls. Which got me scared I must admit, cuz I would be the victim of such a thing since I drank nothing but soda for 20yrs.... then overtime it occurred to me that if that was true, then how long would it take to the the said damage? All my arteries would have been hardened with scar tissues by now. Then I tried looking up researches on that topic and couldn’t find anything to support it. Another fear mongering for views, it might’ve have the characteristics to damage but context matters, over 3yrs? Or 300yrs? And blood glucose spike isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Cuz what is blood glucose? It’s your energy level. There’s 2 ways you can bring it down naturally. 1 is wait for insulin to store it. 2 is use it. I intentionally spike my blood glucose, so I can use option 2 and it gives me such a good workout with all that energy flowing in my blood just ready to be used. As with everything dosage makes the poison and abusing things is never a good thing.

Diet soda doesn't spike insulin. It lacks the calories to do so.
