Darth KittenKat's Journal, 02 Jun 20

Last night something triggered a binge. I ended up eating 2 pieces of chocolate cake, a guava, a clementine, cashews and almonds, a massive bowl of strawberry yogurt and a 200ml Coke. I feel a little bad about it but I'm more interested in WHY the binge happened.

maybe your body was a bit sugar deprived. we do need sugar every now and again. I aim to eat something sweet once a week to keep myself from binge eating. almost like a reward system. if you do well all week you get rewarded with your favourite chocolate or a piece of cake. sugar helps release dopamine and endorphins. the feel good hormone. if you go too long without it, you might become depressed. don't beat yourself up over it. just carry on. you've made good progress so far. you deserve that chocolate cake and yogurt. I just think you should've swapped the coke for come zero. lol

Thanks phatsue! The thing is, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE been depriving myself. I eat some dark Choc almost everyday and I've had some Eid trifle so it's all a bit strange. But I DO have a binge eating problem since I was a teen, I'm grateful that my binge last night was fairly healthy stuff thrown in 😂

True. Especially those nuts. And guavas is has an even higher percentage of vitamin c than oranges. The only thing that beats a guava is a lemon. So fighting cold, flu and Corona while binge eating is a huge plus. Lol

Darth... if it's something in your history, then it's probably less linked to what you eat/don't eat and more connected to something in your history... is definitely that way for me. I have a lot of historical baggage around food, over eating, under eating, guilt eating, guilt not eating, whatever... I had a lot of food related trauma throughout my childhood and sometimes it takes something completely unrelated to trigger something in me and I start secret eating again. (my brain says if no one sees you it doesn't count as calories)... so for me it's really important to track things. I have a bullet journal and I track my weight. but I also track daily habits. next to the habit I have space for one line a day to write. I don't always write on that line... but I will if I am particularly happy or particularly anxious... because both moods lead to something dodgy inside of me. that way I can refer back.. and I have found a trend on things that set that little binge flame alive. it's an interesting way to discover yourself and become more self aware

Wasn’t that on your rest day after doing several days without rest? Exercise and running in particular is a hunger suppressant. I binge on my rest days and I know it’s cause my body is telling me “stocking up cause I know what you’re about to me through”. Don’t worry or won’t affect your goals. Don’t step on the scale for a week and eat/exercise we’ll for a week and it’ll be like nothing happened. Don’t feel guilty either and next time it happens just enjoy it.

In school I had home economics and we learned that one of the main functions of carbohydrates is to provide heat and energy - fast. If you 'starve' your body of those it will at some point manifest in an uncontrollable craving and you will binge. Also as a woman depending on where you are in your cycle your body need to make the required hormones. if it doesn't have what it needs it will get "aggressive" to get it. and then lastly in winter our bodies work far harder to maintain core temperatures and that does expend quite a bit of calories. Remember women tend to have lower core temperatures compared to men.

That's quite ironic lisa_chan, because you know they measure temperature at the door of every shop lately and mine was 36 while my husband's was 33. How did that happen?

I think a lot of us can relate to that feeling of an overwhelming need and want for something we are not supposed to have. It's like reverting to our childhood of sneaking sweets out of the sweets drawer and feeling the thrill of having something we were not allowed. As much as we fight with ourselves to not have that calorie loaded treat, sometimes we just are not strong enough to turn around and say I don't need it. Getting that satisfaction after having a bit of sugar relieved you of a feeling of discontent. Could be something is worrying you that you are not addressing and so you needed the sugar to help you feel better. With me, after one sugary treat, it just triggers the need for more and more sugar and becomes a vicious cycle of sweet then salty then sweet then salty till I finaly stop. Only thing that helps me is not having those treats in the house, can't crave something that is not there. Perhaps you could take some quite time in the day to wright in a journal about all the things that are worrying you. It could help you identify why you might be needing to use sugar to make you feel in a better mood. It sounds like it's not a regular thing. We all make mistakes, it is how we keep fighting to get back on track again.
