magokey's Journal, 02 Mar 20

Ugh, what a jump. Chardonnay is going to be the death of my dieting success. I told my husband this morning after a pretty heavy weekend of drinking that M - Th I need to be on the wagon. No wine, no whiskey. I've seen quite a few journal entries about folks who've been successful or are currently trying to slow down/halt their drinking. I just don't know if I can do it. What do you replace that with when it's become a part of who you are? I can't picture going out to eat and not having 2 or 3 glasses of wine before dinner. On Sundays we typically go to our favorite place and have a few drinks while we plan our dinners for the week, then go to the store and pick up what we need. I already do go to the gym and work out at least 3 days per week. Outside of alcohol, the only other beverages I consume are water, tea, and coffee.

Sorry for sounding so pathetic (as I reread here). One would think an adult woman could easily make this change for herself and her family.

I am 2 months sober now. I replaced alcohol with tea and drinks lots and lots of it for the first month. Sunflower seeds with shells also helped because it distracted my senses. I tried to lose weight without giving up alcohol and it never worked out well. 2 years ago I lost 15 lbs.. then gained it back. Now at 32 in less than half the time it took to lose the 15. It's not easy, but it can be worth it! I read a couple sober curious books and that helped tremendously. I recommend them just if someone is interested in reducing their alcohol consumption. Best of luck to you!

I like a glass of wine....or more 😊 with dinner, too. And lots of our social situations involve adult beverages. When I decided to try to lose weight once again in July I declared it a no alcohol month. I replaced my alcoholic beverages with sparkling water & lime or tonic & lime. When I went back to allowing myself a drink I alternate between mixing vodka (or spirit of choice) with sparkling water, having a low carb/ calorie beer or try to limit wine (I usually drink red) to 2 glasses. I also have tried low cal hard seltzer that I add a splash of sparkling water to. Managing alcohol is like managing foods with higher calories. You can have some in moderation but can't have unlimited amounts. Good luck!

In the power of habit by Charles duhigg (really interesting book) he explains keystone habits. I inadvertently found that my alcohol drinking habit sort of hung off of my morning coffee habit when my gym challenged me to quit drinking coffee and alcohol. (Why coffee? because their logic was to get energy from the food you eat rather than caffeine.) so I quit coffee and ended one ritual where a day doesn’t start until I have coffee. It starts anyway :) I was struggling to quit drinking alcohol until this. Because I trained myself to think my work day/workweek doesn’t end until I have a drink. Replacing that ritual with a new end of day/ week habit was my next task. So I make different drinks to replace it - like I did kava kava with soda water and coffee replacement drinks in the morning. It helped! You will find what works for you!

I haven't given up coffee. But alcohol was easy. If you can't imagine yourself without a few drinks, that will continue to sabotage your weight loss efforts. Think about the impact to your immune system and the multiple number of diseases associated with alcohol consumption. If possible, start by just having one drink, then move to a lovely sparkling water. If you find this impossible, then you will need to stop all drinking. Sorry to be harsh, but not being able to imagine your life without alcohol is a true warning sign. Kombucha with club soda and a few berries is now my before dinner drink. Been there...know the signs! ♥️

I used to have a cocktail or glass of wine everyday... now I’m only drinking 2 days a week.. and I keep whatever alcohol calories I have under 400 calories 💪🏽getting the weight off has become more important ... good luck.. it’s an adjustment but worth it ( I’m 65 pounds down in 7 months) 🥳✌🏽

If you are drinking to be social, then soda water with lemon or lime, unsweetened ice tea, or a diet drink can fill in for whatever liquid you were consuming. I am always the designated driver as my bf has no driver's license. My female friends could care less what I drink. So, I have no peer pressure to consume alcohol. If I have a glass of wine once a week, it's a lot since I don't buy alcohol for myself at home and will only order one alcoholic drink if I am out on the weekend since I hate spending money on things that ruin my diet. I am not perfect, I'll have chips and fries and alcohol, but I don't like myself after I have done it! Two or three drinks would knock me out, so doing that on a Sunday is out for me anyway.

I used to drink everyday sometimes a little too much since the beginning of the year I haven't drank at all and I work at a liquor store part-time so not easy there is a new wine and want to think it's called fit Vin something like that that's lower in carbs and it can be delivered right to your door check into that

Thank you for all the comments, from supportive to critical - they're all appreciated as I focus on internalizing this commitment that I've made for myself.

Like arrowhein, we switch to herbal teas in the evening. Orange, berry and the like. Then 1 or 2 cups of sleepytime extra tea before bed. I’ve not had a drink of alcohol in 3 years now. I just don’t see the need. It was more of a habit I think. Plus, when we go out to eat - it is SO MUCH cheaper now! Lolol.

I think with ANY beverage that has become a habit, it's easy to forget the calorie content or to look at it as "not food" It's the same whether it's alcohol, sugared sodas, sweet tea or cream and sugar in coffee. The fact is you DO need food to survive, so you can learn how to manage those choices. You don't NEED alcohol or sugar to survive, but your system may crave it. It's an added difficult step to look at whether it's an alcohol, caffeine or sugar dependency. I had a friend that was drinking 2 liters of full sugar soda a day, and couldn't break the habit When he eventually did, he lost 40 lbs in a year. It's a hard conversation to have with yourself. Good luck!

Add to that thought. Husband and I LOVE wine with food. We've come to had choice that we will have ONE glass with a meal if it's GOOD. If it's just house wine like cupcake or kendall-jackson, and it's wine for wine's sake, we'll skip that and start with a club soda, then save our wine calories for a better glass that pairs with dinner.

I've been "sober" but actually clean since 1991 - but, to feel a part of or feel accepted in social scenarios, I will often ask for something sparkling - a fruit infused water, or spritzer type of thing - it usually comes from the bar, it usually has all the look of a cocktail, etc. Doesn't pass for wine, but that wasn't ever my choice to begin with... all I'm suggesting is if you find yourself "social" drinking when you're trying to stop, substitute it for something "special" that looks like a cocktail and people won't know unless you tell them! My sister and brother both drink daily, and have a much harder time getting rid of and keeping extra weight off as a result. Wish you nothing but the best!

I still enjoy having a drink, but have vodka on the rocks with lime (zero carbs) and no longer drink wine or other high calorie drinks. Sometimes a slow reduction is easier than cold turkey quitting. Its amazing how many calories and carbs can sneak into a beverage. Best vibes your way! 💖🙏🏻

Wow. I should have done this sooner, like 10 years ago to be exact. Dianasiddiqui, you nailed it. I didn't have anything to drink yesterday, and I literally had to make myself sit down with my husband at 8:30pm - I just kept finding more things to do around the house. I'll try hot tea tonight at 7:30 and see if that helps. Otherwise, I may have the cleanest house I've had in years... Thank you everyone!
