Being careful where I put my feet when I hike. Keep you eyes on the trail. They are out in full force.

This is a fat one, especially for his time of year..the yellow “mustard seed” plants along the trails are up to 6-7 feet tall, even more and grow thick so they take up trail space. My hike time for this time of year is just after sun up when it is cool.and you are less likely to encounter one. If you do, give him his space— you are on his turf.

My trail averages 2 rattlesnake bites per year. I'm really hoping that my family and I never make that statistic. I've had a few patients who've gotten attacked. It is scary. We do our best to save the limb, but it is rough. It also costs over $100k for all of the Crofab injections and treatment.

what a beautiful snake!! definitely be careful

The biggest problem is when (usually) younger hikers (boys) come along and irritate the snake and leave behind a mad serpent— it’s the next group that meets up with the angry snake. If I have plenty of room I just stay out of striking distance and go around, otherwise I just turn around. I have given my fair share of anti venom. We even have rattlers on the occasional beach and people do get bit — no one expects them in that setting.

YIKES!!!!!!!! Have not seen one in ages here. Since I was a kid and a neighbor boy and I were caught playing with baby ones. We put them in a bait bucket. Dad was more fried than mom. Gary and I needed a chaperone obviously. LOL.

I'd definitely worry more about rattlers than alligators.

This fella was big so hard to miss IF you are paying attention. It’s the babies that are the most dangerous. Adults can selectively envenomate,— strike, bite but not inject. Babies cannot control envenomation. You know if your extremity is not 4X normal size in 10-15 minutes that you were lucky. Go to the ER regardless and let them care for the wound..if it is a foot or leg, get your shoe off immediately. Most people today get bit because they are too busy talking on their phones— if they are in an area with reception.

That’s fascinating. I didn’t know that.
