Kenna Morton's Journal, 26 Aug 22

It is such a long process— I am 74 and I’m no where near being a finished product, but I’m also not as half baked as I probably was when I was younger and I will more than likely go to my grave as UNFINISHED. We are never done growing, learning expanding the neuro pathways of our brains. You can see that many people here on FS have entered a phase of their life where they know what they don’t know and are trying to grow. Pretty awesome.

Brain stimulation, expansion of neuro pathways not only diminishes the chance of Alzheimer’s and dementia but keeps our brains younger, sharper and makes us more interesting people. I still go to school and many of the people I attend with are much older than I am.

Joe Not Exotic— I guess prayer can help anything but it is YOU who has to sign up for a class, learn a new skill or take up a hobby that you have never tried before. Pick up a book that has some educational benefit and read. Our brains grow when our existing neuro networks don’t meet a need, as in learning something completely unrelated to your normal life. The brain is then forced to develop who new neuro pathways to accomplish that skill.

are you taking the UC classes, Kenna? that's one of my dreams when my workdays are free. so many things I want to learn about. free to audit classes for those over 55.

Exactly Katsolo— the UC system has creat programs for older adults. I love going to school and studying non- nursing subjects. As a nurse you have to do continuing education to retain licensure, and I still have mine. But it is so fun to take classes in things that I know zero about.

My early years and job helped me grow up fast. The learning curve was steep until I was about 30 and then I could see the mountain through the trees. I am who I was meant to be.

Rice University offers continuing education classes in the evenings, one evening a week. I used to take a class every semester, did it for years and loved it. Mobility problems have slowed me down considerably, but I do try to keep the old brain stimulated.

There are so many online classes now on the internet; lecture series that you don’t even have to register for. GOOGLE, YOU- TUBE are marvelous resources.

Kenna, thank you for reminding us that we're not only working on improving our bodies & health here! Keeping our brains active is also crucial. I love stuff like taking classes, crosswords & puzzles, but I'd forgotten to do them lately. Turns out fun stuff is stimulating & necessary. Perfect timing as new school schedules are starting soon! I'm going to check out the online ones too. THANK YOU! 💕🥸🧐🤓😀😎

Katsolo— this semester I am taking The Essence of Physical Anthropology and I found a Basics of Physical Therapy class and review of current standards. Should be good.
