I’m glad y’all are harvesting the feral hogs (although they may stock them in Texas). How do they taste compared to farm hogs?

Hogs vs pigs… the hog is all red meat

Wait I’m assuming hogs = boars 🤔😂

IMO few areas have true Russian Boar anymore and are a mix of Russian and domesticated pig blends. These definitely had that Russian body build and long bristly look. My experience is the big mature boars stink and are nasty tasting unless soaked in brine and specially prepared. These were all about 100-130 lbs I think.

@66 Why do they taste bad? Is it there diet do you think or a harvesting issue? I know I was very surprised growing up fishing for catfish when I went to the ocean and we caught salt water catfish when the fisherman told me we couldn't eat it and disappointed of course. he said for some reason saltwater catfish are inedible and taste like ammonia :-(.

I know there's a vast difference in the flavor of farm-raised animal and industrial raised animals. my mother-in-law was kind enough to gift us with several pieces of a farm-raised pigs the last couple of years that they've raised and the flavor from that was significantly improved over the industrial raised Pork that you purchased from the store. I remember the fried Chicken from my youth being particularly tasty but that's hard to judge because children have so much better taste buds than adults that I'm not sure if that was the difference at that time or if it was the farm raised chicken without hormones and things of that nature being added that change the flavor.

@mountainman have a good hunt in the spring brother 🎯 Hey I don’t know how to answer Leah’s question about why big boars are generally said to be not good to eat. Can you explain? I know mule deer can get pretty gamey tasting when they consume a lot of sage but then again Antelope eat lots of sage and that’s alway good meat. Personally I’ve never come across any wild meat that was not delicious! Guy on YouTube was even smoking a Racoon the other day! 😳

Ok we dog hunt so bigger boars we catch we won't shoot or knife if we need a boar to breed sows but when it comes time we castrate and finish on acorns before slaughter.and some animals like you say about sage taste like what they eat.swampy ones taste swampy in my opinion.
