Kenna Morton's Journal, 10 Sep 22

Went to the pool to swim today but it was really crowded with kids for some reason. There is this one kid there that I got to know over the summer. Ten years old and an unbelievably good swimmer. He can do more fast laps than I see most adults do. Anyway he finished his laps and was playing with a bunch of boys in the deep end. I suddenly noticed that his behavior was “off” somehow. Almost disoriented. Then he dove into the water and when he came up I could tell he didn’t know where he was. Mom was playing on her phone and the young lifeguard just didn’t recognize what was happening. I swam over and grabbed him and helped him get to the wall. Bottom line was that the kid hadn’t had breakfast, just a “protein” bar of some kind on the way in. He was hypoglycemic. I gave him another protein bar because that’s all I had and water and he felt better quickly.. I wish parents would take this more seriously. Kids are not little adults, and when it is crowed at a pool, like today, you have to watch your kid. Protein bars and Captain Crunch does not constitute a healthy meal for anyone, but certainly not for kids. Had he sunk to the bottom of the pool he could have drowned before anyone noticed.

OMG!!!! So scary!! Thank God you were there! The lifeguards and parents need to up their games. My first 2 jobs were as lifeguards. They could end up with a floater or sinker and I don't mean a turd.

MorticiaAddams—I think this particular situation would have fallen through the cracks regardless. It’s a learned skill to be able to look at a given situation and instantly recognize that there is a problem— then learning to act on it and not being afraid of being wrong or looking foolish or butting in where you don’t belong.. my brain instantly went to its 11 am — the kid has been burning huge calories for about an hour. Even if he had eaten he would have started out mildly dehydrated from sleeping all night. His little body just had no reserves. I recognized that look of incomprehension. Fortunately all ended well. Hopefully mom will put her phone down and watch him. He is amazing. I think we will see this kid do some great things down the line. I did talk to the kid about this just a bit and I’ll talk to him again and make sure he understands what happened and how to ecognize and prevent it.
