Kenna Morton's Journal, 13 Apr 22

I was In the process of writing a little story of the mom and the general and the mom’s 175 lb weight loss. I had a long note written and a slip of the finger deleted the whole thing. The bottom line is that both the mom and the little girl totally got on the healthier lifestyle bandwagon— not on a diet. They also bought Into portion control and the concept of healthier eating most of the time and less optimal choices once in a while. NO GUILT INVOLVED— there was a magnificent little 8 year old involved. They took up walking on the weekends and at night after eating for just 15 minutes or so. They walked to the store to do their grocery shopping. They cooked together as a team and spent so much time trying new recipes. Eventually the little girl wanted to walk a 5 k so everyone got involved in that— and she founded what turned out to be a running club. People at her school and her church, me and many of my friends.
The GENERAL also lost all of her weight, totally got into school and developed a nutrition program to present to her class mates. Then she wanted to be a runner. I called in a couple of friends, one a female pediatrician and another a high school coach and a sports medicine orthopedic doc. They filled in the blanks for me and saw to it that she was doing things safely. Ultimately, eight years later she is 16 years old, with a high grade point average and set for a sports scholarship. Mom has kept her weight off—- she runs also. She got so Into this whole thing that she went back to school and became a life coach and got a great job with an HMO. The medical corporation later sent her back to school at their expense to become an Assistant Functional Medicine Practitioner. At one of the races she and the GENERAL participated in she met and eventually married a wonderful fellow runner and he loves the general with all of his heart and is her biggest supporter. This is life in its best fairytale mode. They both fought hard to get where they are today. Mom was young enough that she still had some skin elasticity and hers rebounded fair. She still has some of that flabby skin but she has chosen to let it be. She is happy and beautiful as it is. Best of all they both have self esteem that would just knock your socks off.

Jergens123– when she first started running many races wouldn’t let her because of her age, 10 years old. Then when she wanted to do her first marathon that was another battle. The mom at that point could run 10 miles, but not the marathon and because of her age she had to have an adult run with her so SARGENT (mom boyfriend by then) ran alongside her. - she dropped at mile18 and he scooped her up and carried her off the route — and to the first aid tent where my friends, the pediatrician, coach and sports medicine docs were waiting.. she recovered without problem and just kept going. At sixteen she has now done 8 marathons.

The mom, BTW was type 2 diabetic, hypertensive and on Metforman and insulin. Now she is on nothing and is so happy. The running crew is called The General’s Army. About 25 kids and their parents or running partners in our little group. My doctor and coach friends go to every race to make sure the kid do ok. They bought into our efforts big time.

Over the last 35 years or so I have a few other people that I mentored who accomplished the very same thing and never looked back. One lady, one of my first, was over 400 pounds when I met her and an entertainer at one of the big resort entertainment parks here in Anaheim. She lost about 225 lb in 2 years. And is still doing great. This can be done. I think one of the important differences I see is that the people I helped did not see themselves as addicted. I never really had anyone say— I can’t loose my weight because I’m addicted to sugar or whatever. It was about depression, boredom, low and self esteme. My very first person I helped was an 18 year old male, gay, he admitted to an eating disorder, but it never really surfaced as an issue once we developed a plan. He is 55 now, happy and in a com, itted relationship with a stable weight all these years.
