Kenna Morton's Journal, 20 Mar 21

I’m on my 500 mile walking challenge and now there are 9 of us doing it. This is not a race or a competition. This is just to encourage a few of my friends along on their healthier lifestyle journey. The goal is to see if in the next 9 months we can walk 500 miles. . If anyone wants to play along feel free to jump in.
Or, start a group of your own people. It’s fun, we will meet up and walk together when we can and separately if need be. Walking does not have to be continuous, the benefit is cumulative. So 30 minutes here, a mile, there, doesn’t matter, just do it. Post pictures of thing you see along the way. This was my walk today by myself. 3 miles, one hour

I just noticed that the date stamp says today’s date but 2017— how does that happen?

It is a gorgeous day here in Southern California. Not too warm and nice and sunny. This is the start of rattlesnake traveling season and mating season. May and June are the times of the year you really have to pay attention. The babies are out and unlike an adult rattler, they are aggressive and they cannot selectively envenomate whereas an adult can. Any juvenile bite is always assumed to be a real strike. Always vigilant.

Good boots are a must and not just for ankle support.

Oh yes, I have real hiking boots for this type of hill walking, with good lugs on them.

Souther California has hundreds of places like this to hike. This particular site is about 5 miles from my house so I go here often. Across from these hills is the ocean which have their own mountainous terrain to hike with incredible vistas at every turn. So many places to hike

5 points granny.— welcome to FS. Many of us in my group of friends have been dedicated hikers for many, many years. Some have lost that over time. I normally swim everyday pre Covid so this last year I have aggressively pulled people back in to walking routinely. I still hike as I always have but the more difficult hikes I do by myself most of the time. We have done well, not suffering the social isolation that many have. Outside, in the sun, and under the blue sky, wearing our masks and doing our thing has helped keep us sane. We have all been distanced from our families, but we still have had each other, walking, hiking, gardening and picnicking in local parks. We are all vaccinated now. A sigh of relief for all.

5 points granny — hiking and just plain old walking is one of the activities that people shoulda, woulda, coulda done right from the beginning. It has been as safe as you can get . We each drove to the meet up location separately with our hiking shoes, lunch box and camp chair and spent several hours just being together, complaining about our kids and laughing. We al have come through this with our mental health intact. Well sort of, we are all crazy before Covid ever came along. I’m in Southern California and it has been brutal..
