Kenna Morton's Journal, 26 Jun 19

Today at the pool I talked to an acquaintance who was a little upset. She is a bad diabetic, type 2 who has refused to do much to help herself and just takes the pill and lives with it. You see, a “pill” is worth it to be able to continue eating what she wants. She is overweight, actually obese. Setting the stage here, Bear with me. This lady is an educator (retired). She went yesterday for her annual physical. Surprise to her, she was also sent for a cognitive study. One of the things they had her do was count backward by threes starting at 99 —- while walking backward. She could not do it. She said that the information just wasn’t there. Really frightened her. After that test and several others were completed Her doctor told her that she was possibly developing early dementia from the damage being done to both the blood vessels and the neurons of her brain from the long standing yo-yo effects of chronic ups and downs of her blood sugar. His recommendation was to decrease her carbohydrates to 120, start insulin and begin resistance training and cardio exercises. She swims every day for about an hour but he wants to see more cardio activity (heart attack 15 years ago). She also will be going through diabetic education again. He also told her that she has six months to show progress and if she continues her non compliance he is going to severe their doctor patient relationship. She was asked to sign a pre printed form stating that she had received all of her results, received the recommendations and understood that she may be required to find a new endocrinologist to assume further care.. Doctors are becoming fed up and taking action of their own. Another friend has already received walking papers from two doctors.

My friend has had pre diabetes and possibly even full on T2 for a long time, but was undiagnosed and untreated. 2 years ago she was talking about some symptoms she had and I KNEW what the problem was. She finally went and was started on Metformin immediately. The doctor has wanted her to start on insulin for almost a year but she refused.

Yes it is hard work when you are diabetic. The options of not following your doctors advice and eating things you should not is an option you will regret. Blindness, neuropathy, dialysis, heart disease, and all the other things are so much worse. I do pray your friend is frighten enough to start taking care of the diabeties before all these things set in and she looses her life earlier than need be.

Edward - that is on average but you also have to look at age group everyone is associated with. Older women are less healthy than older men.

AboutMyTribe - Source? Not saying you’re wrong, but I’m not seeing info that older women are less healthy than older men.

Oh My! I really don't blame the doctor, I was just like her, my doctor had been telling me for year to eat right, and do this and that, and I didn't, and my health suffered, until about 6 years ago, I made up in my mind, that I wanted to live, and I got tired of being sick and tried, I cried out to God to help me, because I couldn't do it by myself, and He did, and I have lost over 235 pounds, I will be praying for her, that God give her the will power to do what she need to do for her well being, and you keep encouraging her, and uplifting her, even when she talk like giving up or don't to do what she need to do, uplifted to push through it, Have a wonderful blessed day and you to stay encourage, uplifted, focus, prayerful, thankful, happy in Jesus Christ and watchful always (Think On WWJD) in your life situations, to be a help to you, and to help someone else along the way. God Bless You!

I don't think doctors should do this! It's against the oath they take to look after people. For whatever reasons she is a sick person and her doctor should try to motivate her positively. If someone told me to get in shape or get out, I would probably go home and reach for comfort food!!!

I’m so glad doctors are starting to do that. My father could use a stiff kick in the butt. He is killing him self. Doctors shouldn’t pretend otherwise.
27 Jun 19 by member: CrashtestDawnie
wow I sure hope she takes positive action after that kick in the butt. doctors should lay it all out there. my boss could use that. he is a starve then binge eater. makes me sad because he will not listen. but I know he doesn't tell his doctor the truth either. your example is one more reason for me to succeed in my goals this year.

Panabode— I’m sorry but your post is a little disjointed and I’m unclear as to what you are trying to say.

@Carolyn...working with researchers who are also clinicians, trust me when I say that they take their work seriously and really think about the patient's (and human subject's) best interest. Lest not forget, we are talking about adults who should have some accountability. They wholeheartedly want to be there for their patients. Sometimes that becomes difficult when doing research where regulations make you draw a clear line between research vs. treatment. MD researchers are often very torn and have to be reminded due to autonomy. People essentially govern themselves and docs help a long the way. But, if a patient doesn't want to be treated then why treat them? Doctors usually have very little time and that time can be used for someone who is taking things more seriously. Hold up an oath to those who have opted in. It's also a waste of money to the patient and a potential liability to the doctor.

Brilliant doctor. Too many patients expect to be able to alleviate their symptoms with a pill and carry on doing what made them sick in the first place. It is shocking that alproach is even an option, and well done the doctor for taking that away, even if down the line. The friend is perhaps feeling it bad now, but will be thankful in the end if she properly follows the advice.

I have the health conditions that your friend has (or similar anyway)...I made the choice to do something. It is her choice, but if it isn't bad enough for her to change no amount of effort by anyone will make a difference. I simply offer my experience to those around me that ask for it..I don't force or demand that they change. I simply offer what is possible. I hope your friends chooses to live.
