adventurelisa's Journal, 23 Sep 13

I've been carb counting for two weeks now. What a huge difference! My weakness is not sweeties nor chocolates, but fruit. And now that I'm watching my carb intake, I really see my bad habits. I'm eating most of my normal foods so I haven't had to make many adjustments except cutting out fruit and Provitas. I don't normally eat starches often so it hasn't been a big change to cut them out completely.

Since cutting carbs I have no bloating, my digestion is better and I'm feeling good again. Doing this was well timed because I'd been feeling crappy for weeks. Just too much sugar, to seems.

Just an observation I made going through your diet calendar. Your fat intake is very high, higher than mine and I'm a bodybuilder and a man who needs fat for optimal testosterone. If you dropped your fat intake to around 40-50g a day you can easily up your carb intake and still lose weight. Don't drop fat under 20g a day, that will influence your sex hormones and your mood. 1g of fat = 9 calories, 1g of carbs = 4 calories and 1g of protein = 4 calories. But I won't go 2 in depth into all the macro-nutrients and how they work, just thought I'd share some advice.

Thanks JrkFitness ;) My fat intake has traditionally been far lower - I have never been much inclined towards fats - even things like butter, which I haven't had on sandwiches (or anything else) since I was a child. I've been focusing on eating more fats. I'm still below the LCHF recommendations. Eating nuts and avocado definitely makes a big difference. The past two weeks I've had avos on hand, but I don't always so that will put a dent in my fats. The biggest change I've made to my normal dietary habits over the past two weeks is cutting out fruit and fruit juice (I was drinking around 1 litre a week - on top of eating fruit) and also cutting out Provitas, which I love. I'm not a big starch eater so eliminating the odd meal with rice or quinoa has been easy. And, I've added in more nuts (I did not normally eat them frequently) and more cheese. The rest is pretty much my normal preferences. Logging food has been such an eye opener!

I had a look through your logs and everything looks great to me. Way to go Adventurelisa! p.s. However, you are definitely below the LCHF recommendations on your fat intake. I have a very nice keto calculator saved in my bookmarks (works out your protein, fats, and carbs on LCHF). If you are interested you can inbox me and I will send it to you.

Tnx LowCarbFemmeFit - I'll drop you a note. I'm not sold on the whole keto thing - going seriously low carb. This has been a good lesson so far on fat intake too. My fat intake before two weeks ago was certainly lower than this - for years. It's just never been part of my natural inclination. Getting my fats up is a conscious effort.

I understand where you are coming from. After being fat phobic for 20 years plus and eating low fat and fat free products it was quite a shock to learn how bad these products really are - pumped full of sugar and artificial additives, to make them taste "better". I too had to make a conscious effort to increase the healthy fats etc...I watched Hungry For Change a few days ago and it really confirmed so much for me. Have a great day!
