Still struggling with wanting to eat after I've went to bed...ugh. I don't run to sugar anymore, but calories are calories that late at night or maybe not. I just know, "I would like to really finally figure" out the mental or actual physical need to eat that late.

I don’t know but my husband has always needed a snack before bed. With exercising eating healthy he lost weight and improved his a1c but he eats either Raisin Bran or fat free Greek yogurt with fruit. I know for me I can’t snack before bed and not gain.

Have a little protein - a little goes a long way! A small glass of milk (3-4 oz), a piece or 3 (domino size) of cheese, a teaspoon or 2 of nut butter on a cracker or some apple slices, a hard boiled egg, a small portion 1/4 cup or less..) of nuts (I've been eating 2-3 Brazil nuts - I've had some hair loss and Brazil nuts are high in Selenium and 3 are only 70 calories. Don't overdo it though, too much is not good) I've been finding if I wake up in the middle of the night hungry (IF? Hello hot flashes!) sometimes just the small glass of milk does it for me. I do drink whole milk as I don't like the taste of low fat milk /skim - yuk!. It's the fat and the protein that's filling and will hold you through the night (hopefully!) Hope this helps! Happy sleeping through the night! :)

Habit -- it's simply a habit. It's like driving on a road and it's part of your regular routine. Your brain goes on autopilot and takes you to that 'familar place' while you are not really concentrating because you are singing your favorite song during the car ride -- and you it got you got there safely. Every night I have to tell my brain 'No, it's too late to eat, wait until the morning." I guess that's why they call it - LifeStyle Change. Some times my brain get's pissed and I will dream of eating bread, or even be restless most of the night while I change the nasty midnight eating habit. I used to tell myself that I just could not sleep on an empty stomach --- it was a lie, an excuse. Midnight eating disrupts all the maintainence functions your body needs to do - it has to stop the work of healing itself to digest that mid night snack. Long comment, hope it helps.
