I've been thinking about this a while ..There are so many things that I wish someone would have told me 10 months ago when I started so I've decided to pay it forward and share what I know/learned about my weight loss journey..Some is good, some is not so good but its all my honest experience.
1. Dont expect results over night.. How long did it take you to gain that weight? In my case it took me 5 yrs to get this way..I've been anxious and annoyed that Im so flabby but I realized, I cant fix in 10 months what it took me 5 yrs to tear apart.Baby steps
2. With that said, expect flab, and sag and giggly wibbly wobbly areas.. If you have a lot of weight to loose, that excess skin most likely will have no where to go. Unless you can afford surgery, get used it bc your stuck with it no matter how much you loose.
3.You will have stretch marks if you don't already..
4. There will be good days and bad days, don't let the bad days rule your life. Pick up the pieces, dust yourself off and move on. Dont let one small cheat day become an excuse to quit.
5. Dont listen to what other people say. Do this for you.I always hated to hear " OMG what happened to you.. your so fat now" or " why bother, your so old/married/ fat ". My reason are my own and I'm not doing this for you.. I'm doing it for me..go die in a hole.. jk jk
6. Dont let the gym scare you... You might be insecure and think people are looking at you.. they are not. They are too concerned and in love with themselves.. Do your own thing.
7. Dress for success when you work out, even if its just walking bc chafing is a serious thing. So is athletes foot. Women can get athletes foot too.. take care of your body now that its all sticky and sweaty.. I prefer the 2 showers a day game plan .. which also means you will need to wash your hair a lot more than you do now.. LOL
8. Plan ahead.. make meals plans, grocery list, work out schedules. plan plan plan, being unprepared is the best way to set yourself up for failure.
9. Log everything honestly.. I still dont do this all the time. My mom always said, " your only lying to yourself when you lie, " this is so true.
10. Set goals. Little goals, big goals, daily goals, long term goals.. and stick to them.. then reward yourself when your reach them..
I dont know if this will help anyone or not but this is me, straight up, sharing what Ive learned this last year.. Its been hard. Its been fun. Dont be afraid to ask for help. Dont be afraid to try new things. Love yourself. You are worthy, you are strong, and you can do this if you want it bad enough.. Im living proof, good things happen to people who work hard !! Cheers !

I am learning these very same things! I'm trying not to stress out so much about it, which of course has slowed by weight loss down, but I am not quitting. Just trying to chill out. You have done so well! I am so impressed and just hope that I can do as well as you have. Keep on truckin' girl!

Very good, very true. I especially agree with not expecting overnight results. That's what discourages many people and makes them quit. For myself, I've found that once I let go of the "deadlines" and "gotta lose this much by this time" thinking, after a while that no longer mattered and it really became a long term change of eating/living. Despite ups and downs along the way it's become a journey that I don't expect to see end, it'll just change as I move forward and onward with life.

Thank you. I needed that. Today especially. I cannot get out by myself so I have to depend on others, mainly my husband. He is not against me losing weight but I have seizures and he worries more about that. Sometimes I just get discouraged because I have tried so many things. But I will keep trying.

JMB3450,, thats soo true.. I set goals but i dont set deadlines //50 lbs by Xmas.. its impossible .. Im human, Imma make mistakes and not meeting a deadline would just crush me personally... If and when I do set deadlines.. they are more like goals.. i would love to be at 170 by 10/31.. is my "goal" but if i dont make then MEH.. the weight is still there and needs to be lost. bahahaha.

Very well put and kudos to you Red, your right it takes time and you should do it for you and no else. It is a process on how you see yourself and it may takes years not to see that fat person in the mirror or one day you may look in that mirror and say damn I look great :)

Rockies, I agree totally. Some days I still see myself as that fat person but hey, I could still be that fatter person . hahaha.. but some days i just stare at myself and actually think about swim suits.. Its a love/hate relationship... more love than hate for sure.. the struggle is real though..

You've done an incredible job and you should be very proud. I wish I had done this at 40. Wait. I did. At 40. At 50. And now, I hope for the last time at 60+. One thing I take issue with -- given that you are only 40 and you are exercising regularly, you may not be stuck with as much of that flabby skin as you think. At your age, your skin may have enough elasticity that over time (not a few months, but a few years), with continued exercise, you may find that your stretched out skin snaps back into shape. I, on the other hand, will be totally stuck with it. I can already see it in my thighs because, of course, that's where I am losing all the weight. My legs are getting thinner and thinner, while my middle gets smaller at an almost imperceptible rate. I know it's happening, because I can wear 14W pants easily now. The problem is, my legs are about a size 10, so all my pants look gigantic, but fit perfectly at the waist. We just all have to keep on trucking, don't we?

Me too. Essentially, all of my adulthood, I've been focused on my weight and how others perceive me. Now I am just doing it for my health and emotional well being so I look good when I take the big "dirt nap".

Great point Hermiones Mom..I def now think there is hope for my ab flab yet... and my bat wings hahaha.. Ive started to use coco butter (it worked when i was preggers eh?) with the hopes that I can bounce back a bit..If not, Im over it and realized I have so much to be grateful for, I can live with the flab....

Beautifully put. All of it is the truth.

All great observations about trying not getting frustrated & impatient with the results. I shake my head when I read posts of long-term members here who treat this site like it's Facebook for Fatties; they've obviously given up long ago in exercising any type of self-restraint, possibly for all the reasons you just detailed above.

Jferg1949, Ive spent the last 2 yrs not wanting to attend any social functions bc I was too worried about what people thought about me and how much weight I've gained. Im done caring about what any one thinks. I think a lot of us are.. we should be..Lets do this for us !! We deserve it !!

You are very correct RED !! Thank you for sharing !

Thank you so much for writing and sharing this. So many of your points will hit home with nearly everyone who has been working on themselves. When I started trying to lose weight, I had little idea that it involved so much more than just what I put in my mouth. Over time, you learn so much about yourself, how you live, how you look at yourself, and how you want to live the rest of your life. Good for you for recognizing so many of the steps we've had to go through.
