An educational vid for me to make me think about how and why I lift. I have the old man struggle to build mass, but new to lifting so what do I want to train for? Hypertrophy or strength? This vid gives Jeff Cavaliers views on training to failure for hypertrophy or strength. I’m all ears here…Opinions please! Any other 65+ guys here? Think I need to switch to heavier weights and fewer reps. ?

He is exactly right. I think most lifters should go to "failure" because it most likely isn't failure, it's 2 reps shy of it. Most cannot withstand the pain and/or produce the effort to go to true failure. Once you're seasoned, you will still go to "failure" but in the back of your mind, you know it isn't true failure. True failure isn't necessary and can actually be detrimental for prolonged periods of time.

Heavier less reps or lighter higher reps, really it’s preference. I get bored of high reps lol so I go the heaviest I can that I can still feel my muscles is doing most of the work and not my joints n tendons. Also heavier weights helps stop me from destroying my muscles, I tend to go too far on lighter weights cuz I handle the pain pretty good. But I’m not 65 so I don’t know what you’re going through

Also I don’t know why people think you can’t get hypertrophy on heavy weights. As long as you are lifting with the concept of control and not efficiency then you’ll grow. By efficiency I mean lifting the heaviest with the least amount of effort. When you do that you are playing with momentum and tendon rebound to move the weight.
