I've been doing more reading about foods that can give us some benefits and came across Amasi which some of us also know as "sour milk". For those that don't know, it's similar to greek yoghurt but with a more drinking yoghurt consistency.

It's packed with calcium, potassium and beneficial bacteria known as probiotics.

Here's an extract from an article I read about probiotics :
"Today, years later, research is continuously revealing to us that probiotic foods help with a range of health concerns:

*Probiotics improve digestive functions, including reducing constipation, bloating and diarrhea
*They can boost immunity and offer increased protection against cancer, allergies, parasites, infections and illnesses. One study done in Colombia found that treatment with probiotic strains could result in a 60 percent reduction in certain type of intestinal infection that affects children and can cause mortality in some cases
*Probiotics have been correlated with better cognitive functioning and protection against dementia and Alzeimerā€™s disease
*They also play a role in regulating hormones, including those that control appetite, satiety and body weight"

" One type of probiotic called Lactobacilli is especially good at converting carbohydrates in your diet (including a type of called lactose which is found in milk and dairy products) to other acids, which helps improve overall metabolism and digestion."

I experimented with Amasi and mixed a cup of it with half a serving of vanilla whey powder and it tasted like the olden day granadilla Yogisip that used to come in a carton :) I also sliced a banana into pieces and added to it. I've tried replacing yoghurt with it and it was enjoyable but it depends on your taste pallet because it is sour on its own. Some people add sugar to it but for our purpose one can add a sweetener.

I read somewhere that adding Amasi to your eating can help achieve a flatter tummy.

Give it a try :) It's also very affordable. I paid R35 for this 4kg bottle when it was on sale.

Amasi is awesome. Other natural sources of probiotics include water/milk kefir, fermented foods and kombucha. All acquired tastes, but all super healthy.
